LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has offered a new contract proposal to workers represented by SEIU Local 99, but details have been limited.

The union is asking for a 30% wage increase plus a $2 per hour additional raise for the lowest-paid workers. They are also demanding a massive expansion of healthcare benefits and a 3% bonus. Arias had said he would return to negotiations immediately only if the union's wage demands were met.

Local 99 members, who make an average of $25,000, have been working part time without adequate pay or benefits. Joining in the strike would be members of United Teachers Los Angeles, which represents teachers, nurses, therapists, counselors, and librarians. Local 99 members include custodians, bus drivers, teacher aides, security aides, special education assistants, and food-service workers.

The LAUSD has denied any wrongdoing and has scheduled a news conference for Monday to address the situation. However, union leaders have stated that they are not in negotiations with the district and are prepared to strike if necessary.
